GPT Image 2.5 arrived on September 8, 2026 as two API models rather than one. OpenAI's own one-line summary is the place to start: Flare "brings the same improvements in quality, editing, and speed" and is "the default choice for most applications", while Sunburst "offers an extra level of precision for detailed creative work with longer generation times".
That is the whole decision in one sentence: Flare is fast, Sunburst is slow and more precise. Everything below is about when that trade actually matters.
The short answer
- Exploring? Use Flare. You will try more versions in the same amount of time.
- Shipping? Use Sunburst. It is built for "production-ready campaign creative or polished product imagery".
- On ShimmerPic they cost the same credits, so the only thing you spend on Sunburst is time.
What OpenAI says each model is for
Flare is positioned for "creator and social content, product experiences, visual search, rapid image prototyping, and high-volume generation", at 50% lower latency than GPT Image 2. One early customer quoted in the launch post reports Flare at "two to four times the speed of GPT‑Image‑2" with "improved transparent-background generation". Another highlights that it "understands what not to change" when editing.
Sunburst is positioned for "premium visual workflows that benefit from tighter control across edits". That phrase — tighter control across edits — is the tell: Sunburst is meant for work where you will go back into the image several times and need every pass to leave the rest alone.
What we saw side by side
We ran seven prompts from the community library unchanged on both models, once each, at 1:1, 2K, Standard. The pairs are on the comparison page; the pattern was consistent enough to summarise:
- Sunburst added more detail per element. A miniature city prompt became a varied village with a church, trees and tiny figures on Sunburst; on Flare it was a more uniform block of concrete buildings.
- Sunburst produced more finished layouts. A streetwear poster came back as a product hero under a large wordmark with a second line of copy; Flare gave a model in a scene with a smaller headline.
- Text was fine on both. Brand names, taglines, handwritten annotations and dense Chinese map labels all rendered legibly in our samples.
- Flare leaned simpler. Not worse — simpler compositions, fewer elements, closer to an editorial photograph than a campaign visual.
One run per prompt is a sample, not a benchmark. But it lines up with OpenAI's framing well enough to act on.
The practical workflow
- Write the prompt, or open one from the library.
- Generate on Flare two or three times, adjusting wording between runs.
- When one version is close, switch the model dropdown to Sunburst and generate the keeper.
- Both results stay in your creations; download whichever wins.
