How it works

  1. Start with the current model. GPT Image 2 is retired on ShimmerPic. Open the GPT Image 2.5 Flare page to review its settings and credits before creating. The old GPT Image 2 model-page address redirects to Flare; new requests cannot select the retired model.
  2. Try the same prompt on Flare. Flare is the closest thing to a drop-in replacement: same task, faster, with the 2.5 quality improvements. 3 credits at 1K, and new accounts start with 15.
  3. Re-run the keeper on Sunburst. Sunburst is the precision half of the 2.5 pair. Same credits as Flare, slower, more fine surface detail in our own comparison runs. The side-by-side page shows real pairs from the same prompt.

What to put in the prompt

Prompts written for 2.0 still work. Nothing about the prompt format changed between the generations. What changes is how literally the light, the texture and the reference photo come through.

Re-test your reference-heavy prompts first. Reference preservation is where 2.5 moved most. If you had prompts that drifted on 2.0 when you uploaded a product, those are the ones worth running again.

Expect edits to hold better. Multi-turn editing was specifically called out in the 2.5 release. Chains of instructions that used to degrade after two rounds tend to survive further now.

Do not assume identical output. This is a different model generation, not a patched one. A prompt tuned against 2.0 output may need its lighting clause loosened before 2.5 stops over-delivering on it.

On the axes OpenAI published in the launch post — detail, lighting, texture, reference preservation, multi-turn editing and latency — yes, 2.5 is the newer generation and improves on each. Whether it is better for your specific prompt is worth testing; output style did shift between generations.

What is the difference between gpt-image-2 and GPT Image 2.5 Flare?

They are separate model generations. Flare belongs to the 2.5 pair released on 8 September 2026 and is positioned as the default of the two, at up to 50% lower latency than GPT Image 2. Sunburst is its precision counterpart.
